Families Helping Families of Greater Baton Rouge Presents:

Before the Bell Rings 2013-2014


BATON ROUGE, LA—Families Helping Families of Greater Baton Rouge (FHFGBR) will host a two-segment back-to-school workshop, "Before the Bell Rings 2013-2014” on Tuesday, August 20th from 10:00am – 12:00pm. The workshop will be held at the FHFGBR training room at 2356 Drusilla Lane, Baton Rouge, LA 70809.

At this workshop, two topics will be elaborated on and presented by our Inclusive Education Department’s Program Director, Cynthia Chesterfield and Educational Support Specialist, Kara Shupe.

· The first topic, Parental Involvement and Advocacy, focuses on encouraging parents to play a vital role in their child’s education. Having sound relationships with school personnel is vital in their child’s success as well as effectively advocating on behalf of their child.

· The second topic, Steps to a Successful New School Year, will give parents tips on making sure the teachers and staff working with their child have a in depth understanding of your child’s strengths and weaknesses as well as insight into the child’s home life. Parents will also learn the importance of keeping documentation of all communication between home and school.

About Inclusive Education

The Inclusive Education Department of Families Helping Families of Greater Baton Rouge strives to empower parents of children receiving special education services in Region 2 of Louisiana to become the best advocates possible. The staff provide one-on-one support as well as attending school meetings with parents. They also provide numerous workshops and conferences throughout the year dealing with special education topics. Funding for these services is provided through a grant from the Louisiana State Department of Education.

Families Helping Families of Greater Baton Rouge serves as a valuable resource center in a statewide network of Families Helping Families located across Louisiana. FHFGBR is committed to helping families who have members with disabilities as well as self-advocates. FHFGBR provides information, referral, education, training and parent-to-parent support for disability issues to individuals living in the parishes of East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Ascension, Iberville, East Feliciana, West Feliciana, Point Coupee and Livingston. A disability may be physical, mental, emotional, behavioral and/or academic. Families Helping Families staff can answer questions and provide support, resources and referrals.
