The Nonprofit Finance Fund's 2014 State of the Nonprofit Sector Survey, released today, finds demand for services up among 80% of 5,000 responding charities, the sixth straight year of reported increase, and that most (56%) were unable to meet that demand.
The report also finds revenue sources shifting, with nearly half of charities that receive public money reporting a decline in government funding over the past five years.
Achieving long-term financial stability was named a "top challenge" by many nonprofits, with almost one-third (28%) of respondents reporting a 2013 year-end deficit and a majority having three months or less of cash-on-hand to fund operations.
About one nonprofit in ten expects improvement in the coming year.
