BREC, Capital Area Corporation Recycling Council Partner for America Recycles Electronics Collections Event

In honor of America Recycles Day, BREC is asking local residents for all unused and unwanted electronics. The recreation and park department is partnering with the Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council Saturday, Nov. 16, for a collection day.

BREC will present the recycling awareness event as a way to inform the general public about local recycling and conservation resources. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at City-Brooks Park, located at 1515 Dalrymple Drive in Baton Rouge.

The free electronics recycling collection will be open to all greater Baton Rouge-area residents.

Recyclables include computer hardware and accessories, monitors, laptops, audio equipment, and DVDs to name a few. Appliances, televisions and furniture cannot be recycled through the CACRC. All donated equipment will be refurbished or recycled via the CACRC’s Responsible Recycling Practices (R2) Program. For a complete list of items, go online to www.cacrc.com/what.html.

The Capital Area Corporation Recycling Council, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge to Host "America Recycles Day" Electronics Event

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge and the Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council are going to "reuse, recover and recycle" on Saturday, Nov. 16, for America Recycles Day.

The two nonprofits are teaming up to offer a free electronics recycling event to greater Baton Rouge-area residents during Habitat ReStore's 10th anniversary celebration. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Habitat Restore parking lot, located at 4301 Airline Hwy in Baton Rouge.

The local America Recycles Day bash will be featured at the Restore location as part of CACRC’s effort to promote a "green" lifestyle through electronics recycling and to support Habitat's "reuse" mission, according to Nancy Jo Craig, executive director for the CACRC.

Helping Hearts Holiday Donation Drive

This Holliday Season, Lets Extend our Helping Hands to those in need. National Alliance on Mental Illness of Southwest Louisiana will be collecting donations for people affected by serious mental illness and homeless veterans.

When: November 1st to December 13th, 2013. Between 10am-4pm.

Where: NAMI SWLA office in the United Way building. 715 Ryan St. Suite 203, Lake Charles, LA 70601.

Items needed:

• Non-opened hygiene products

• New socks (one size fits all)

• Paper products such as toilet paper and paper towels

• Leisure items such as pencils/pens, crossword/find words books, journals, puzzles

The items collected will benefit City of Refuge, shelter for Homeless Veterans, in Vinton, LA and Mason D’Amis, an apartment in Lake Charles for those affected by serious mental illness, and other Mental Health Recovery Centers in the Lake area.

Help us make a difference in our community this Holiday season!

Last Chance: University of New Orleans Solicits Input on Transportation Priorities in Statewide Opinion Poll

This statewide public opinion poll is part of a study sponsored by the Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and the Louisiana Transportation Research Center, focused on how to more effectively coordinate transportation investments and manage growth to promote the development of more livable, economically competitive communities. 

The outcome of this research effort will be a blueprint of potential tools and policies that local and regional governments can use to coordinate infrastructure investment with development to encourage a safe, efficient, sustainable, and multimodal transportation system that effectively meets current and future demand.

University of New Orleans seeks responses from diverse interests all over the state, from neighborhood associations to statewide interest and advocacy organizations, in order to attain a poll sample that is as geographically and demographically representative as possible.

One Shopping Trip Pays For Membership

It's hard to put a dollar value on the benefit of some things, but LANO membership isn't one of them.

On a trip today to Office Depot (a LANO member) we printed 175 programs for this week's 2013 Member Meeting and purchased assorted other materials for the two-day training.  

Total bill?  $245.22 after discount.

Total SAVINGS with LANO Member Discount Card? $131.07

That's a 35% savings on the shopping trip, unless my pre-Common Core math is faulty.  The savings on the color copies alone was even more impressive: LANO saved 62% today on its printing costs!

So, what?

Got Cooks? Men Cooks are needed for this awesome event and you have until Friday November 8, 2013 to sign up to take part in all the FUN! Come party with a purpose!

Cooks, can be individuals, teams or corporate and dishes will be judged by a panel of "celebrity" judges and can prepare dishes in the following categories: Meats, Side Dishes, Vegetables, Louisiana Cajun and Desserts.

We're also looking for a high school or community jazz band to provide music for the event!
