Posted By Denise McMahan, CausePlanet, Tuesday, February 21, 2012

If you haven't written a general case for support recently, Tom Ahern argues you really don't know why you're raising money.

Writing a compelling case forces you to think about your organization's promise, your organization's proof and how the donor fits into your world.

Join a lively interview with Tom Ahern and led by CausePlanet publisher Denise McMahan to find out:

  • What three essential questions you must answer in your case
  • Why you need to "get stupid,” and

Prepare to be Browsed

Posted By Denise McMahan, CausePlanet, Thursday, February 16, 2012

I laughed out loud when I read this passage: "Here's the unvarnished truth: people do not want to read your stuff. Sure, they want to understand your stuff and absorb your stuff. But spend long stretches of time reading it? Not particularly. In our bustling world, if I understand your vision in 15 rather than 30 minutes, that's a good thing. If I understand your vision in five minutes rather than 15, that's even better. And if you could slip me a pill and I'd understand your vision instantly, that would be the best.”

Finally, someone had the courage to say it. Tom Ahern, the author of Seeing Through A Donor's Eyes,is responsible for this passage and is currently featured at CausePlanet. This book is a must read for anyone who raises money, works with someone who raises money or manages someone who raises money. Ahern is a three-time winner of the prestigious International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Gold Quill awards, given each year to the best communications work worldwide. Beloved international trainer and highly successful consultant, his firm specializes in capital campaign statements, nonprofit communications audits, direct mail and donor newsletters.

So how do you get your direct mail, newsletters and proposals read? Having a good ... Read more

Three branding experts converge on smart communications

Posted By Denise McMahan, CausePlanet, Wednesday, February 8, 2012

What do you get when you mix the expertise of Brandraising author, Sarah Durham, and Breakthrough Nonprofit Branding co-authors, Jocelyne Daw and Carol Cone? You have a wonderful blend of advice that's caffeinated with a triple shot of branding smarts.

When two books we've featured at CausePlanet converge on the same topic, I can't help but highlight where thought leaders intersect. It's like having two consultants in the room agree on how to give your communications a jumpstart (or espresso shot). What a luxury! Here are only a few of the many author intersections I discovered:

Read more of this article and don't forget that LANO members can now download these two Page to Practice book summaries for FREE, thanks to the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation. Click through for instructions.

Also at the "Read more" link above is a FREE registration link to attend the live webcast interview with branding expert and author Jocelyne Daw on Thurs, February 16 at 2 p.m. Join CausePlanet for this lively conversation Daw about the 11 visionary nonprofits that demonstrate breakthrough branding.

Consultant Volunteering 40 Hours in February

Posted By L L Gibbs Consulting, Wednesday, February 1, 2012

LANO has been such a wonderful resource for me, and I wanted to do something to let them know how much I appreciate them. I thought about buying a small token gift and dropping it off, but then I had a better idea...

I remembered the movie "Pay It Forward.” If you haven’t seen it, go find and watch it. It’s a great story! Anyway, I decided that I would pass the favors along and "pay it forward."

I would like to donate 40 hours in February to LANO nonprofit member organizations. I have a background in Development with successful grants, fundraising events, and appeals. If you could use a little help this month, please let me know.

Many thanks to the staff at LANO!

Grantsmanship Training

Posted By L L Gibbs Consulting, Wednesday, February 1, 2012

Last week I had the opportunity to attend the Grantsmanship Training hosted by LANO member Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area.

People came from several different states, and as far away as Panama and Barbados. It was an extraordinary experience, and everyone there came away with information and evaluations which will increase the chances of our proposals being funded. Our instructor, Mary Ruth Clowdsley, was fantastic! She offered years of experience as a grant writer, reviewer, and teacher.

Thanks to Barbara Auten and her staff at Alzheimer’s Services for hosting this training. They went above and beyond in making us feel welcome and supplying us with delicious snacks! We also had the chance to visit "Charlie’s Place,” and what they do there for Alzheimer patients and their families is awesome!

Rethink your renewal strategy with IRA donors

Posted By Denise McMahan, CausePlanet, Monday, January 30, 2012

If your charity was the fortunate beneficiary of a large donation in 2011 thanks to the popular IRA provision, allowing 70+ year-olds to make a contribution up to $100,000 dollars, then you'll want to rethink your renewal strategy. "Now this benefit is gone, at least until Congress restores it,” according to the Wall Street Journal article by Laura Saunders last week.

While your typical donor incentives with traditional gifts (like a tax deduction) don't apply here, seniors do appreciate not having to count IRA distributions as income if they give it to charity. This saves them higher taxes on Social Security payments or higher Medicare premiums, says Saunders. This Individual Retirement Account (IRA) rule was one of sixty federal tax provisions that expired in 2011. Similarly in 2006, 2009 and 2010, the law expired but wasn't re-enacted until December, leaving seniors scrambling with their charitable plans and nonprofits in reactionary mode.

"Fortunately, there are ways of working with the current system this year,” says Erica Crenshaw, CEO of Execute Now!, a nonprofit financial services firm. Nonprofits are uniquely positioned to...Read more
