“Seize Your Big Opportunity” Contest

Posted By Denise McMahan, CausePlanet, Monday, October 17, 2011

The nonprofit organization is no stranger to the necessity of buy-in. Be it building a case for support or engaging a board of directors to make a change, buy-in can make or break an organization on a small and large scale.

Without understanding how potential attacks can disrupt consensus around important change, leaders are leaving their organizational growth to chance and potentially empty attacks or unfounded fears of naysayers.

At CausePlanet, we recently featured John Kotter and Lorne Whitehead's book, Buy-In: Saving Your Good Ideas from Getting Shot Down. With the benefit of Kotter and Whitehead's counterintuitive approach, nonprofit leaders can get smart about how objections are formed and delivered as well as overcome them, critical skills for any situation where two or more opposing viewpoints are likely to surface.

In addition to providing responses to common objections in their book, the authors also suggest eight steps for successful, large-scale change: Read more

Internal Controls Policy Tips

Posted By Erica Crenshaw, Execute Now!, Monday, October 17, 2011
Updated: Monday, November 7, 2011

How often should you review your organization's internal controls policy?

Annually!

Why? We should do so for the following reasons:

  1. Following organizational changes, such as a new E.D. hire
  2. Following a restructuring of organizational programs
  3. When there's an increase in revenue or additional monthly transactions
  4. Whenever you gain new contracts or grants that have more stringent requirements
Remember, the nonprofit's President or CEO has a responsibility to implement, follow and regularly test her or his organization's internal controls.

Also note: A Policy and Procedures Manual should outline the internal controls of the organization; and the relevant parties should be trained on those controls and procedures on an annual basis as well.

What is Financial Leadership?

Posted By Erica Crenshaw, Execute Now!, Monday, October 10, 2011
Updated: Monday, October 10, 2011
Financial leadership is making nonprofits aware of problems before they exist. It’s not good enough to provide accurate bookkeeping and report issues as they emerge.

Financial leadership requires forward-looking analysis to imagine creative ways to fund growth and develop strategies to address challenges before they manifest.

Our goal at Execute Now! is to ensure our clients' financial well-being through prudent fiscal management and forward-thinking leadership.

Execute Now! is client-focused and mission-driven!  Please keep in touch with Execute Now! on Facebook, on Twitter @executenow, and through the LANO website at our member profile.

Introducing FAQ Fridays from Execute Now!

Posted By Erica Crenshaw, Execute Now!, Friday, October 7, 2011
Updated: Friday, October 7, 2011
"FAQ Fridays": What is one reason to establish a finance team?

ANSWER: Proper Financial Controls. A finance team provides stability to an important function in all organizations. It also helps the company establish a strong financial foundation through implementing strong internal controls.

This foundation should ideally be established before an organization launches. It is important that a handbook be created and employees are trained before the company begins generating revenue.

CEOs and other executives with financial responsibilities should be trained on these controls. It is easier for fraud to take place and potential audit issues to arise when only one person is responsible for controlling the inflows and outflows of funds that are reported on financial reports that same person creates.

Can you afford to pay 13 times more in current salaries?

Posted By Denise McMahan, CausePlanet, Thursday, October 6, 2011
Updated: Thursday, October 6, 2011

Peter Drucker once said, "The ability to make good decisions regarding people represents one of the last reliable sources of competitive advantage, since very few organizations are very good at it.”

Most organizations are terrible, if not inconsistent, at hiring. This is not a good thing at all since talent matters more than any other resource in a nonprofit. Numerous studies report that the most successful companies are those run by leaders who understand that people are the most important part of the business equation. Despite these reports, CEOs still do not prioritize the hiring process and end up losing precious time and money. Losses in recruiting, training, and productivity can be staggering—up to 13 times that person's salary and more for managerial or revenue-generating positions, says Erling.

Dan Erling is the author of our new Page to Practice™ feature this month at CausePlanet: Match: A Systematic, Sane Process for Hiring the Right Person Every Time.

"Most organizations will tell you that having the right people..." Read more

Your prospect has four sets of ears: Are you speaking to them?

Posted By Denise McMahan, CausePlanet, Thursday, September 29, 2011

This month we are featuring Tom Ahern's recent book, How to Write Fundraising Materials that Raise More Money (Emerson & Church 2011).

Despite our lack of Tom Ahern's vast communications credentials, we find ourselves fully entrenched in writing tasks. No matter how you communicate, whether you are a social media fan or a champion of direct mail, your understanding of effective donor communications will be essential to nonprofit success.

While it's widely accepted that no two readers are alike, we continue writing to them as if they are. Your donors are not target markets or segments; they are people with different motivations for giving to your nonprofit. No matter how well-intentioned your messages are, the reality is that you are still an intrusion. So we must raise the bar in writing donor-centric messages to inspire action.

Donors have special interests, and here's a short list of what they care deeply about... Read more
