According to a recent study by researchers Patricia Smith and Joshua Harris of the Public Policy Research Lab at LSU, a little over half of all Louisiana adults volunteer in their communities.

The study, commissioned by Volunteer Louisiana, reveals that in the past year, 51 percent of Louisianians 18 or older volunteered, and more than 85 percent indicated they would continue to donate their time to projects or causes during the next year.

The study was conducted in April 2011 and called on 720 respondents from 216 cities in all 64 parishes.

According to Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne, whose office oversees the legislatively created Volunteer Louisiana, "These findings suggest the lasting benefit of encouraging people to volunteer...We are gratified to know that so many citizens are volunteering their time."
