The House Committee on Municipal, Parochial and Cultural Affairs' agenda includes an update  on HR 86 of the 2011 Regular Session which directs the Committee to study the impact of the homestead exemption, nonprofit exemption, and other property tax exemptions on local government revenue.

LANO has released its New Orleans Nonprofit Property Tax Exemption Survey Report and will be presenting the results of the survey at the Committee meeting. We encourage nonprofit property owners to:

  • Share with LANO what effect property tax imposition would have on your organization (Identify the percent of your operating budget a property tax – if levied upon your organization rather than the current exemption – would have over a fiscal year. Further identify how your organization would manage the additional financial burden: adjust services, reduce staff, etc. Any specific services provided by your nonprofit as a direct service to the public sector should also be highlighted to assist our public officials in understanding the extent of partnership provided by nonprofits to lessen the responsibilities of government in these challenging economic times.)
  • Share with members of the House Committee on Municipal, Parochial and Cultural Affairs what effects this would have on your organization.
  • Provide written testimony to the Committee
  • Testify before the Committee

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ashley Herad at or (225) 929-5266 ext. 222.
