In 1993, Volunteer Louisiana was established in the Office of the Lt. Governor to rekindle the spirit of service and citizenship among Louisianians.

The mission of the Volunteer Louisiana is to build and sustain high quality programs that meet the needs of Louisiana's citizens and promote an ethic of service. We are proud that 47 percent of Louisiana adults volunteer to make their communities a better place to work, live and play.

We are celebrating our 20th anniversary with a Champions of Service Gala on October 24, 2013 in Baton Rouge to recognize outstanding service leadership throughout the state.

We will honor Warrick Dunn, former Catholic High standout and NFL running back, as our Louisiana Champion of Service. He established Warrick Dunn Charities focused on providing programs and services for single parents who are committed to achieving stability for themselves and their children. In 2012, Warrick Dunn Charities expanded its service to include a mobile children's bereavement program called Betty’s Hope in Baton Rouge.

We will also be recognizing five regional service leaders nominated by their communities and will be conducting a community service project during the event with Blue Star Mothers to write cards of thanks and support to our Louisiana troops oversees.
