Annette Simmons is a vibrant speaker, consultant and author of four books: The Story Factor named as one of The 100 Best Business Books of All Time, Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins, A Safe Place for Dangerous Truth (AMACOM, 1998),and Territorial Games: Understanding and Ending Turf Wars at Work.

Annette earned her business degree from Louisiana State University in 1983,spent ten years in Australia in international business, attained a M.Ed. from NC State in 1994 and started Group Process Consulting in 1996. Annette is surprisingly honest, ferrets out hidden opportunities, joyfully takes risks and tells a good story.



A special guest plenary panel will feature leaders from social justice, human services, and the environment, coached by Annette, who will share their stories.

Earl Michael Willis, Director of Business Development at Checkmate Strategies will provide insightful strategies on how using storytelling has been successful in shaping and changing public policy from the State House (Louisiana Legislature) to the U.S. Congress.  




Beyond the Elevator: Creating a Story that Inspires Your Prospects (and Other Very Important People)

In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn a simple outline for a compelling, three-minute-or-less story that you can use to inspire your prospective donors, as well as your event attendees, prospective board members, members of the media, and anyone else who needs to understand just how great your nonprofit is. This story strategy is simple enough to share at your next board or staff meeting so that you can help everyone on your team tell a great organizational story.

In this workshop, participants will learn about common obstacles to strategy success in the nonprofit sector and will receive a framework for auditing and resolving these obstacles.  Participants will reflect on their own human capital issues, and participate in facilitated information sharing among workshop participants on interventions. These activities will prepare participants to bring back ideas regarding workforce management to their own organizations. The workshop will include a case study of LPHI’s journey through discovery, building a human capital management strategy, and executing targeted solutions. This work was funded by The Kresge Foundation as a part of a national initiative in capacity building, partnering with AchieveMission, a leadership development and human capital management consulting firm working with mission-focused organizations.


Overtime Regulations 101: Prepare Now for December 1st changes!

What you don’t know will hurt you!! The new Overtime Regulations will affect almost every nonprofit.  The rule will entitle most salaried “white collar” workers (Executives, Administrators and Professionals) who earn less than $913 a week ($47,476 a year) to overtime pay.  It will literally impact every segment of your organization from your budget, employees and funders etc.  It is a total and complete shift in how we operate and will begin in December the most critical time for many nonprofits raising the majority of their support for the year.

This interactive session includes an overview of why stories are so important in fundraising, and offers tips on how to use mission moments, testimonials and images to enrich all aspects of communicating your mission.




The Art and Science of Retaining Digital Donors

Retention is your most important fundraising strategy, and your online donors are seriously at risk. Among all your donors, they are the least likely to renew their gifts – unless you take specific, creative steps to engage and thank them.

This session will help you discover how to maximize the retention rates of your digital donors. We will examine the attributes of online donors, and outline the retention strategies that work best for this slice of your donor database.

  • Understand what makes online donors tick (their habits, patterns, likes and dislikes)
  • Learn how to formulate a retention strategy for online donors

Nonprofit entities account for 10 percent of reported fraud cases, with a median loss of $100,000.
