A new report from LANO, Columbia Books and Association TRENDS compiles 2013 survey data indicating salary and benefit ranges for more than 100 Louisiana nonprofit positions.

The Compensation Report: An Analysis of Nonprofits in Louisiana contains more than 115 pages of charts illustrating salary ranges by title; weighted averages by budget, staff size and organizational category; detailed job descriptions; plus health, life, retirement and executive benefits offered by a representative sample of Louisiana charities.

The purpose of the report is to provide Louisiana nonprofit Boards, employees and donors the most current compensation data to inform budgeting, staffing and strategic planning decisions that guide thousands of important missions statewide.

Selected Findings:

Participants' Mission and Budgets

  • Health and Human Service-related missions made up the largest block of responding nonprofits at 41%
  • About half (51%) of all respondents were organizations with less than $1M in annual revenue
  • About half of responding organizations have fewer than 10 employees
  • Only 4 in 10 nonprofits reported overall budget increase from 2012
  • About half of respondents (48%) increased budget for salary in 2013; but the largest increase was seen at the 0-5% level: essentially a cost-of-living adjustment

Employee Benefits

  • Most responding nonprofits (70%) offer some medical benefits to employees
  • The most common healthcare provider partners are Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs; 67%) and Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs; 32%)
  • Average employer payment is 79% of healthcare cost.  The lowest was 67%, paid by the smallest orgs, with budgets under $250K; the highest percentage (85%) was paid by those nonprofits only slightly larger, in the $250-500K range
  • 44% of nonprofits offer employee dental plans; only 24% offer vision plans
  • About half of Louisiana nonprofits offer life insurance; slightly more than half (55%) offer retirement benefits
  • Most nonprofits (84%) offer paid holidays, but other kinds of paid leave are less commonly offered.  Nearly 1 in 10 nonprofits offer no paid leave.
  • The majority of responding nonprofits (85%) offer no benefits to part-time employees

The full report, including salary figures, is available for purchase in downloadable electronic format for $150, with a 50% discount offered to current LANO member organizations and their registered staff and Board volunteers.
