The June 11 issue of the Baton Rouge Business report features LANO as an organization leading in the use of mobile technology during its member meetings and seminars.

Writer Maggie Heyn Richardson's article "The New Etiquette" highlights the now common practice of meeting attendants checking email on cell phones and making other use of smart mobile devices during business presentations.

While a distraction to some organizations, LANO CEO Ann S. Williamson notes that smartphones and tablets can add value to business meetings and that the Association encourages such use where it can make meetings more productive.

"LANO is absolutely in the thick of this issue,” Williamson says. "One of the values we bring to our clients is (utilizing) knowledge and tools, and it's important we impart that knowledge and that we impact behavior. We view smartphones or notebooks as things that add value to the experience. We want to encourage their use while not losing sight of etiquette.”

Three years ago, LANO invested in a significant overhaul of its website as a way to better engage its statewide membership. Nonprofits can now log in and access newsfeeds, webinars and virtual training sessions meant to help them improve the way they manage resources and serve clients. Eighteen months ago, LANO also introduced an iPhone app that makes it easy for training session participants to access handouts and supplementary material during or after face-to-face workshops.
